Prologue to Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi (1607) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mD16EVxNOM

Introductory remarks:

The silence, like the night for the light, is like a secret for the music. The “silent music” sings to the ears of the soul, “because although it is silent as far as the senses and natural powers are concerned, it is a very sonorous solitude for the spiritual powers. ” (St. John of the Cross) The words are silver but the silence is gold’, this adage from antiquity makes the silence bearer of the unspeakable, like the mysterious silence of the term of the Prologue of Monteverdi’s Orfeo or which is implicit in the music of Callada of Mompou, where he acts as a soundproof border that covers the metaphysical hearing of the harmony of the spheres.
