Introductory remarks:
Challenging notions of gender and race, Kara Walker’s “Subtlety” questions the vision of “sugar and spice and all things nice” challenging the viewer on multiple sensory levels. Early in her career, Walker stated her intention was “to make work where the viewer wouldn’t walk away; he would giggle nervously, get pulled into history, into fiction, into something totally demeaning and possibly very beautiful”. (Quoted in Viveros-Fauné, C. “Kara Walker’s Thrilling Whitney Retrospective: Riding the Racial High-Wire,” Village Voice, October 16, 2007.)
